This week’s drawing comes in two flavors, graffiti and graffiti-free.

This week’s theme is CATS! And being the person that I am, I thought to myself, why not utterly abuse this theme and do yet another Gotham City Denizen. And so, I give you, Catwoman.

Things I have learned: Just because I can recognize a cheese cakey pose, does not mean I can completely create it on the page. In this case: big fingers, a seductive nail bite does not make.

Closing thought: It occured to me while I began this (last night, before my WACOM tablet went to high hell) how much I’ll be missing the Catwoman comic series (which ends with it’s next issue…#81, I believe). It wasn’t the most mind-shatteringly brilliant comic book to ever be created, but it made consistant good use of her and her role in the DC Comics world, which is one that’s rather unique and wonderful (and was criminally underexposed prior to the series). But I looked forward to it’s fun crime stories and it’s wonderfully sexy, simple (yet very detailed) art every month.

I’ll shut up now.

Apologies for the slow updates. On top of my day to day work, I’ve been doing extra stuff in preparation for my three week trip to Scotland (I leave this Thursday night). Anyway, due to all of this, I’ve been spending much less time sketching and in turn have much less to put up here.

Anyway, this week’s Benbo challenge was the Hulk. Here I decided to sketch Banner transforming into the Hulk….Enjoy…. or not…..

In case you are wondering “why is the Hulk tearing through Banner’s skin?” or “Why is Gamma radiation burning away Banner’s skin as the Hulk grows/tears out of him? That is not how I remember it from the comics/movie/tv show.”

The answer is “Tough shit! That is how I decided to draw it!”

I decided to play around with his look a little, experimenting with kabuki mask/facepaint-like elements to make this ghost guy’s face a little more bizarre.

I had trouble with the gold element in the helmet. But I think it turned out ok in the end.

Ahhh, another Bendis Board challenge, this week: Gak! Guh-Guh-Gollum (http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=149288)! Probably the one that took me the longest and the one that I’m the most unhappy with. I wanted to show more of the body, but I fucked it up and I was only happy with how the head ended up. However, I had the idea of hiding the rest in shadow and I kind of like the end result…..kind of.

Oh well. They can’t all be perfect.

Another week, another challenge. This week’s is Marv (http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=148541) from SIN CITY. Out of all of these speed sketches, this one is definitely the one I’m proudest of (thus far). A slightly desaturated color palette seems to be the way to go with this style of inking (of course, since this was a SIN CITY character, I opted for only greys). Initially I was thinking of shading the bandages a bit, but I liked how they played with the blacks and greys enough to leave them be.

Another week, another challenge from the Bendis Boards! This week’s challenge is Batgirl (http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=147597). While intially I was leaning towards the Cassandra Cain, Batgirl costume, I felt like it would be a bit of a cop-out to draw a head sketch of a character whose mouth is covered up. So I ended up settling on the Barbara Gordon cowl.

I decided to continue with this new inking style I’ve been playing with. Below is the final painted version, and the original inks (much of which was cleaned up for the final version).

Here’s a speed-color-sketch-thing I did for a challenge on the Bendis Boards (which can be found here: http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=147023) of a Skrull. Not happy about how the lighting on his head-cloth turned out. Initially I was going to make the left side of it black and inked it in a way that would play towards that. Then I decided to highlight that side, so I went about trying to fix the inks…..and well, the shape of the head-cloth got fucked up. Did my best to correct it. Hopefully it looks ok….
